UNESCO Recognizes Moroccan Caftan as World Heritage

The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee has today approved the registration of the Moroccan caftan as world heritage. The Moroccan government stated in a press release that this 'international recognition culminates the Kingdom's efforts in preserving Moroccan cultural heritage.' The press release added that Morocco submitted 'a comprehensive file including key elements that highlight the richness and evolution of the intangible cultural heritage related to the caftan.' The statement considers the caftan to be 'more than just a garment; it is a living symbol of Moroccan identity, passed down from mother to daughter and from master to apprentice for over eight centuries. It also embodies an exceptional technical and aesthetic heritage celebrated worldwide.' The Moroccan caftan is the official attire for formal and ceremonial occasions, whether religious or familial, and typically consists of a single embroidered piece adorned with gold or silver threads. A traditional Moroccan artisan may also embellish it with shimmering stones on silk, lace, or velvet. Previously, UNESCO had registered the artistic practices of Gnaoua music and Tbourida (Moroccan equestrian art), as well as the dish Couscous, on its list of intangible heritage.
