On Sunday, 37 people died in the city of Asfi, located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, due to sudden floods caused by heavy rains. Water flooded many homes and stores. This is the highest number of fatalities from such weather conditions in Morocco in over a decade. According to a local statement, Asfi, located about 300 km south of Rabat, was hit by severe thunderstorms that caused exceptional floodwaters in just one hour. A previous report had stated that 32 people were injured and taken to the city's hospital, most of whom were discharged after receiving care. Autumn in Morocco typically sees a gradual drop in temperatures, but experts note that this combination increases the risk of flash floods. Photos circulating on social media showed a torrent of muddy water sweeping through Asfi's streets, sweeping away cars and debris. On Monday, authorities announced a new death toll, confirming 37 fatalities. Other images showed a partially submerged shrine and civil defense boats responding to rescue calls from residents. Authorities reported that at least 70 homes and shops in Asfi's old town were flooded, 10 cars were swept away, and part of a road was damaged, causing traffic jams on several streets. Efforts to find possible victims continue, and authorities are working to 'secure the affected areas' and 'provide the necessary support and assistance to the affected residents,' according to officials in Asfi. The General Directorate of Meteorology had warned on Saturday of snowfall above 1,700 meters and heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms in several regions over the weekend. This is the highest death toll from weather-related incidents in Morocco in more than a decade. However, climate change is currently mitigating this temperature drop while retaining high levels of residual summer moisture. The meteorological office forecast heavy rains with local thunderstorms across the country on Tuesday evening. Authorities stated that 14 people are receiving medical treatment at Asfi's Mohammed V Hospital, including two in the intensive care unit, and that 'field search, rescue, and assistance operations for the affected' are ongoing.
